And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground.
- 1 Samuel 3:19 (KJV)
What a remarkable testimony about young Samuel’s life! The Lord “did let none of his words fall to the ground.” This phrase captures something profound about the nature of godly speech and the power of words that flow from a heart aligned with God’s purposes.
Words That Stand vs. Words That Fall
When we consider what it means for words to “fall to the ground,” we’re looking at the difference between speech that carries divine weight and words that are empty, worthless, or even harmful. Samuel’s words carried authority because they were God’s words flowing through a surrendered vessel. As Scripture tells us elsewhere, God’s word “shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please” (Isaiah 55:11).
The contrast is striking. While Samuel’s words never fell to the ground, how often do our own words tumble down like autumn leaves — forgotten, ineffective, or worse yet, causing damage where they land?
The Heart Connection
Jesus taught us a fundamental truth about speech: “For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh” (Matthew 12:34). Samuel’s words carried divine authority because his heart was surrendered to God’s will. When our hearts are filled with God’s love, wisdom, and truth, our speech naturally reflects that abundance.
This means that godly speech isn’t simply about choosing better words — it’s about cultivating a heart that’s so aligned with God that our words flow from His character within us.
Seasoned Speech
Paul reminds us to “let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt” (Colossians 4:6). Words seasoned with salt preserve, enhance, and bring out the best in every conversation. They don’t corrupt or tear down; they build up and encourage.
Words that fall to the ground are often the opposite - dirty words that nobody likes to hear and nobody likes to retain. These aren’t necessarily profanity (though they could be), but any speech that tears down, gossips, complains, or spreads negativity. Such words leave a bitter taste and quickly lose their impact.
The Company We Keep
Proverbs warns us about the influence of corrupt speech: we’re told to refrain from keeping company with those who have “a froward tongue” because “he that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed” (Proverbs 13:20). The words we surround ourselves with shape the words that come from our own mouths.
Samuel made a choice to grow with God, and as a result, his speech reflected divine wisdom rather than human foolishness. We face the same choice daily — will we align our hearts and speech with God’s character, or will we allow the world’s influence to corrupt our conversation?
Ready with an Answer
Peter challenges us to “be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear” (1 Peter 3:15). When our words are rooted in God’s truth and delivered with His grace, they carry the same authority that marked Samuel’s speech.
This doesn’t mean we’ll always have eloquent responses, but it does mean our words will carry weight because they flow from a life surrendered to God’s purposes.
Practical Application
How can we ensure our words don’t fall to the ground?
Guard your heart. Spend time in God’s Word, allowing His truth to fill the abundance of your heart. What goes in will inevitably come out. If we hide God’s Word in our heart and the mouth speaks from the abundance in our heart then God’s Word should pour forth!
Choose your company wisely. Surround yourself with people whose speech builds up rather than tears down. Iron sharpens iron when both pieces are committed to becoming sharper.
Pause before speaking. In our age of instant communication, the discipline of thoughtful speech is more important than ever. Ask yourself: “Will these words accomplish something good, or will they simply fall to the ground?”
Speak with grace and salt. Let your words preserve relationships, enhance understanding, and bring out the best in every situation.
The Promise
The beautiful promise in Samuel’s story is that when we align our hearts with God’s heart, He honors our words with His authority. Not because we’re perfect, but because we’re surrendered vessels through whom His truth can flow.
May our words today be words that never fall to the ground - words that carry the weight of heaven and accomplish the purposes of our faithful God.
Take time today to consider: What characterised the last words you spoke? Did they build up or tear down? Were they seasoned with grace, or did they fall uselessly to the ground? Ask God to help your speech reflect the abundance of a heart surrendered to Him.
